Guide
Website redesign checklist for small businesses.
How to tell whether your website is due a redesign, and how to avoid losing what already brings you customers.
Signs a redesign is due
- It is awkward to use on a phone.
- The content no longer describes your business accurately.
- Visitors arrive but rarely contact you.
- It is slow, or parts of it are broken.
- You cannot update it without help.
Before the redesign starts
- Save the data you have: Google Search Console queries and pages, and analytics if you use it.
- List every page on the current site, especially those that receive visitors.
- Decide for each page whether to keep, merge, rewrite or remove it.
- Note the current page titles and descriptions that are working.
- Agree the new page structure before any visual design begins.
At launch
- Make sure every address that changed points to its new equivalent.
- Check the site on a phone, and test every form and contact link.
- Check each page has its own title, description and one main heading.
- Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console.
After launch
Watch Search Console for crawl errors and for pages that stop appearing. Small drops are normal while search engines reprocess the site; address anything that stays broken.
