Guide
How much does a small business website cost?
The honest answer is that it depends on what the site has to do. Here is what moves the price and how to compare quotes properly.
What drives the price
- Who builds it. A website builder you operate yourself, a freelancer and an agency are priced very differently, and so is the time you spend.
- Number of pages. A three-page site and a ten-page site are different amounts of design, content and testing.
- Features. A contact form is simple. Booking, an online shop or a chatbot add tools, set-up and often monthly provider fees.
- Content. Whether you supply the text and images, or they need to be written and sourced.
- Custom design. Agreed layouts for your brand take longer than a clean standard structure.
What is often charged separately
The build price is rarely the whole cost. Check whether these are included in a quote:
- Domain name registration, renewed every year.
- Hosting, whether monthly or yearly.
- Fees for third-party tools such as booking or shop platforms.
- Updates, backups and small edits after launch.
Questions to ask before you agree a price
- How many pages are included, and what happens if you need another?
- How many rounds of revisions are included?
- When does the delivery estimate start, and what do you need to supply first?
- What is not included?
- Is the price fixed, and is it confirmed in writing before you pay?
Prices across the market vary widely, so compare what is included rather than the headline figure.
